We have developed a modelling tool to enable the local Trust to explore consultant requirements in the context of changing demands and strategic shifts in services. The approach required detailed analysis of cluster data to determine aggregate patient flows alongside assumptions about the skill mix necessary to support each group of clients. This was then aligned with current consultant recruitment and retention to provide an evidence base for future workforce planning for this important professional group.
